In this book from the critically acclaimed, multimillion-copy bestselling Little People, BIG DREAMS series, discover the life of Ernest Shackleton, the fearless Antarctic adventurer. When Ernest Shackleton was young, he longed for a life of adventure. After a career in the Merchant Navy, he joined a landmark expedition to try to reach the South Pole for the first time in history.
Although he had to go home early, he never gave up. His own expeditions set new records for the closest anyone had ever been to the South Pole, and he is remembered now as a courageous and inspirational leader. This exciting book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the intrepid explorer's life.
Our review: Ernest Shackleton, the famous explorer whose story I didn’t really know until I read this book. It turns out his story is less about bravery than it is about teamwork, leadership, and responsibility. In this book we learn that Ernest Shackleton was not just a brave explorer but a person that really cared about his crew and did everything he could to bring them all safely home when their adventure went awry. It’s a wonderfully inspiring story with messages that could be taken onboard in the real world, not just on magnificent expeditions to the Antarctic. The adventure itself feels magical, with whales and polar bears spotted from tiny boats crammed with optimistic explorers and their cat. The illustrations really capture the feel of the story and the disposition of the crew. I especially loved the photo album page full of snapshots of them during their many months spent stuck on the iceberg.
A good talking point from this book would be to discuss the inclusion of only men on the journey. This is fitting for the time of Ernest Shackleton but I felt it would be important to make it clear to children that times have somewhat changed and that women can be explorers now too.

Inquisitarium was founded on the belief that children learn through play and that toys and books have the power to spark wonder and cultivate a curious personality. We love sourcing the best toys that provide a sensory experience or teach the child something valuable. We are also completely addicted to children's books; our favourites are the beautifully illustrated ones with factual details seamlessly woven into a good bedtime story.
The name 'inquisitarium' aims to create a feeling of place for the sense of being inquisitive, curious and questioning about the universe. It also sounds like a terrarium, which fits wonderfully with our efforts to be green.
